Guitar Hero World Tour Wii Microphone Not Working? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Alexis M. (Rivithed)
Thursday, 25 December 2008

We've been getting many questions asking about the Wii Microphone in Guitar Hero World Tour not working. Not sure if this will help some of you, but know first off that you need a Wii Remote Controller for the USB Wii Mic to work. Each instrument, including the Wii Guitar Hero Mic, needs a Wii Remote assigned to it. Here's the answer from Activision Customer Support.

If you are still having issues, visit the Activision and RedOctane Guitar Hero support website here. Hopefully that helps! If you are still having problems, leave your comments below. Anyone out there that has experienced similar difficulty, or if you have another issue with the Guitar Hero World Tour peripherals, please share with your comments below. We have a lot of new Guitar Hero World Tour gamers now after the holidays, so help 'em out! Thanks!

Wii Remote controllers are available here from Amazon.com for $35.99 (no tax and you can also save with free shipping as an Amazon.com Prime Member).

UPDATE 12/25/09: It looks like new Wii Band Hero gamers are experiencing the same problem and confusion that Wii Guitar Hero World Tour gamers experienced last year during Christmas. You should have a Wii Remote for the Microphone. If you need an extra one, there's a good deal for an extra Wii Remote in the Wii Play package at $39.99 or the Black Wii Remote with Black Wii MotionPlus Bundle for $44.99.

I think that it should be really apparent that you NEED three remotes to play Guitar Hero Band BEFORE you buy the game ...its really disappointing to buy the game and find out you have to have 3 remotes in order to be a band...So let me just say...IM VERY PISSED OFF. Its a sly marketing scheme. Lame.

You connect it to the back of the wii in the USB port

hi quick question. my friend is trying to find another mic for her american idol wii game. we know nothing about these games they are for our kids! someone told us the mic from wii rock band could be used for american idol too. is this true or should we just get an american idol one?
thank anyone who can help!
WTF microphone?
Written by Guest on 2009-04-10 23:31:43
I've got an American Idol USB microphone (which I *know* works because I tested it using the AI game) connected into the back of the Wii but it won't recognize the mic. I tried all of the tricks listed here and at the support site. Anyone else have any ideas?
Another USB microphone not detected
Written by Guest on 2009-04-16 09:17:34
I enjoyed ghwt for few months. Worked great. I have 4 wiimotes so for the drum
and 2 guitars and 1 free for the USB microphone.

But last time after upgading to 4.0 and wanted to play with friends,
i noticed that the wii did not detect the microphone although it was clearly pluged in the back.

I tried every thing i could find on forums, like turning off wii and starting the game with one "free" of instrument wiimote and microphone pluged... I just can not get the wii to detect my microphone.

My USB logitec works like a charm on my computer and other wii. My usb ports are working fine with logitech keyboard so i guess there is a software bug.

What should I do? Get my Wii fixed by NINTENDO or is there a way to fix this myself?
better mics

is there a way I can plug a better mic into the wii? Something like an sm58 run through some kind of usb sound card? If not will any USB mic work?

after many hours, we figured it out... FIRST connect the mic to the usb port on back of the console, THEN go back to the game's setup screen and assign one of the wiimotes to the mic. :grin

I just bought a Guitar Hero wired microphone from game stop. It works with GH Metallica (1 guitar and 1 Wiimote sync), but when I try with World Tour (1 guitar and 1 Wiimote sync) it wont even show on the second player until I plug in an instrument, even then it only lets me select the instrument that's plugged in.

I've wanted Guitar Hero World Tour for over a year, and finally purchased it. You need a remote for every single item? Wow!! I've spent 189 dollars on the product and now another 70+ on remotes? To top it off, I find out that not only does MY remote not work, but others have been experiencing the same problem!! What now? I am SOOO disappointed!! :(

It's ashame this many people including myself are having this many problems getting the microphone to work. I think Nintendo or who ever is over this needs to do a recall or a patch or what ever and fix this major issue. Or give us a refund on the mic itself. This is ridiculous.
Here's some help I found....
Written by Guest on 2009-08-09 04:12:48
just go to the main screen first. then turn on a wii remote (not one in the guitar or drums or anthing; just a wii remote by itself). then plug in your mic to the back of the wii. now go to wherever you wanna go and use the wii remote to control it.
you use the wii remote to control everything ; the mic is specifically only for singing in to.
OR
1. Turn off your Wii

2. Then plug you microphone
into the USB slot on the back

3. then turn on the system
(oh yeah you need an extra wii remote to use the microphone)

4. then start up the game using
your wii remote with nothing connected
to it (nun-chuck, guitar, or drums)

5. Then use the wii remote to navigate through the menus

to test it just go to quick play and do practice and chose vocals
OR
Plug the microphone directly into you unit. Then plug everything else into the wireless controller for the guitar, it's the only one with expandable ports. For my PS3, I HAD to have the regular handheld controller plugged in, the microphone would NOT work unless the regular handheld controller was plugged in. You notice how the drums and guitar have the navigation buttons, but the microphone doesn't? That's because the microphone is using the handheld controller's navigation buttons. Next you need to enable the mic in your settings...

For wii:

Do the following to setup your microphone:

1. Turn off game console.

2. Insert USB connector into an available USB port.

3.Turn on game console and insert game disc.

4. Configure the microphone within the game software, as necessary.

Refer to game manual for game-specific configuration settings.
NO DUH

An additional WII controller must be turned on or the MIC will not function. How else will you select your difficulty level, etc.

Now go buy your three WII remotes and rock on suckaAAHHH's

The box clearly states that you need a wii remote for the guitar and for the drums. It says NOTHING about needing one for the microphone. It's very misleading. By explicity omitting that information, it implicitly says you DONT need a controller for the mic.
Wii remotes for guitar hero world tour

:( ok, so the guy at the store says everything you need is in the box...yeah right, exept for the additional remotes you need...we have 2, but if we want to play 4 people we need 2 more remotes - very very disapointing... knew I should have bought it for the PS2

Besides the obvious, how do i get this mic. to work? I can't seem to get my 3rd controller to sinc up to the Wii. and then how does the controller work with the mic? does it need to be next to it at all times? the directions are horrible!!!

Time to dump my Wii and go PS3
Written by Guest on 2009-09-26 15:49:08
After having never ending frustrations on compatibility and having to purchase two sets of equipment for every game I am electing to sell my Wii piece of crap and get a real system. A PS3. After buying a rockband certified microphone that didn't work in rockband even with an additional Wii mote, I have decided it is too much. Running back and forth from the store, wasting my time... wasting my friends time.
This simple thing worked for me after al

I had so much trouble w/my Guitar Hero Mic also. I even returned it for a new one w/no change but I finally got mine to work. While it was off, I plugged the mic into the usb port on the back & unplugged the Wii from the wall outlet. Left it unplugged for a few minutes then plugged the Wii back into the outlet & no problem ever since! (Tried this because a few days before my 30 day return time was up on the Wii it quit booting up at all. Unplugged from the wall to pack it up & take it back but then decided after a few minutes I'd try one more time before taking it back. When I plugged it back in it worked fine & haven't had a problem again. Maybe this will help. Please post if this helped anyone else. I am curious to see if it was just my system or if it helped anyone else!

Hi Looks like all are having trouble with the microphone !

Okay, so we have to have three controllers, but when you plug the mic in the back, go to set up menu to register the extra controller... ? is that right.... WHY can't it just work when plugged in like it does for the Kareoke !!! YES it works in that but only the mic !

CAN'T THE NUMCHUCK BE REGISTERED FOR THE MIC ?

Band Hero microphone problems
Written by Guest on 2009-12-26 07:31:12
Can I just echo the above experience. Bought Band Hero for £170 from Argos. Only had 2 remotes. One went in guitar, the other in drums. They work fine, but yes I can't sing with the band as the microphone is dead. Although it does work on the Sing Along part of the menu. Going to have to shell out for a third remote. Noted something about this asterixed on the outer packaging in tiny writing, but it's not at all clear what is inferred. Merry Xmas you Nintendo money-sucking bastards.

You would think if this has been going on for a year, nintendo would fix the problem!. Sucks that when I bought the unit toys r us didn't let me know, I would have bought an extra controller then. They lost out on the purchase!

Here is the deal..... you need 3 remotes if you want to sing, jam on drums and rock on guitar. If you want an extra guitar you need 4 remotes.
Plug the USB from the mic into the back of the wii console, not the remote. Turn on the game with a remote that is not in the drums or guitar. After that you will be able to do whatever with the game. Remember the remote that is not plugged in to anything is the main remote and you still control the player that is singing.
One way to check is to go to career or quick play with just the 1 remote and the mic plugged into the back of the game console...when you turn it on there should be a microphone symbol in the top corner of your player... speak into the mic and it should turn red.. hope this helps, I just spent 3 hours messing with it.

My God, I had no idea how many people are having trouble with that mike.

My wife bought Guitar Hero World Tour (Wii) as a Christmas present for the family.

One remote went in to the guitar, one went to the drumset. Now I discover that I need to buy another remote for the mike.

Tried the game with only the mike and a remote. Plugged the mike at the back, used the remote to navigate menus, and the game still can't detect the mike.

And to think we bought the expensive original version because we wanted quality.

I should have just bought the uber cheap bootleg version of the game and 2 third-party made-in-China guitars.

Grrr.
Please HELP
