Epic Games expands Unreal Engine to the Far East PDF Print E-mail

Epic Games has vastly grown the video game industry through their proprietary Unreal Engine development technology. They have decided to continue to expand their empire into South Korea, one of the fastest growing gaming markets in the world. This new business venture by Epic Games will allow developers in South Korea to license Unreal tech and get support for this development from folks working out of Seoul, the capital of Korea.

The Seoul branch will be managed by Ray Park, formally of Massive, Inc., the company behind Microsoft’s in-game advertising company. Also, Jack Porter, who will take on the Support Manager role and a former Epic Games employee, will bring his knowledge of the Korean development community to the new office. Recently, Porter has been working with various Korean developers, who have adapted Unreal Technology to various games including Magnacarta 1 and 2, and an unreleased MMO project, The Day, from Reloaded Studios. Park throws out his own quote for you all: “The opening of Epic Games Korea signifies Epic’s desire to collaborate more closely with the Korean game development community, as we view our licensees’ successes as our own.”

This move, from one of the biggest independent game developers in the industry, is very smart due to the fact that the Korean market is basically untouched by the magic of western game developers. The only game from a western developer to make a true impact on Korea is Starcraft. Now all we need is an RTS or free-to-play MMO with Unreal Engine technology and they'll sell a ton of copies. I wonder how the US economy has impacted this decision, or maybe if it has been on hold for a while now due to the lack of funding from the crippled economies of the world.
