Electronic Arts has let us know that they are officially working on the next entry into the Command and Conquer series. For those who are unaware, a PR person from the UK EA team tweeted that it was under development, even though they linked to a blank press release. The game is still being developed by EALA, the studio behind the most recent game and will be shipping sometime in 2010.
This installment of the series takes place after Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. Again, Tiberium is bound to destroy the planet. Kane is still insane. There will be massive battles and at the end, the Tiberium series will be finished. This isn’t a spoiler because it was in the press release, so all of you fanboys, don't complain. You now will be able to progress throughout the campaign, create mobile bases and participate in “class-based gameplay.” EA has confirmed co-op play in this title, which means that it will probably coming to consoles someday, but is only currently slated for the PC. One new feature that is included is 5 vs. 5 objective based multiplayer, which is an interesting step for the series. Unfortunately, I think it is a mistake not bringing this game to Xbox 360 and PS3 day one, but if you wait six months from the PC launch you may have it.
I didn't play the last entry into the series, or any of them since the original Tiberium Wars. I think that these changes could help the series evolve, while still being able to bring the Tiberium series to an end. Where does the series go from here? EALA knows, but we can only wonder. I can maybe see a re-imagining of the first title because that would be great for an XBLA, PSN or PC release.
