Nintendo today made the Wii's Internet Channel available as a free download for everyone. The Internet Channel, available for download from the Wii Shop, is basically a web browser on the Wii system. Originally, it was offered as a free download for a limited time, which then went on sale for 500 Wii Points ($5) in July 2007. Nintendo today decided to make it accessible to everyone by offering it for free. If you previously purchased the Wii Internet Channel, don't worry. Nintendo will be offering those of you who spent 500 Wii Points on the Internet Channel a free download of your choice of a NES game from the Virtual Console, valued at 500 Wii Points. Keep a lookout on your Wii Message Board (and that glowing blue message indicator on your Wii system) or on Nintendo.com for the deal, coming at the end of October 2009. “Wii has truly changed the way people play games, but it is more than just a game console,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Wii owners have access to a wealth of fun entertainment, information and practical tools like the Internet Channel, which is another great way for the whole family to enjoy their consoles with no additional costs involved.” If you previously downloaded the Wii Internet Channel, you should get a message from Nintendo today on your Wii system about the update, with a link to get the new version. Just click on the "Start" button in the message and it'll take you to the Update page via the Wii Shop. An update noted is an upgrade from Flash 7 to Flash version 8 (Flash Lite 3.1).
