Many were surprised to find that the new PS3 controller will be lacking the "rumble" function, common in most gaming controllers today. Sony dropped the feature after adding the "tilt" motion function to its PS3 controller. According to Sony, the rumble function was dropped because it could not operate with the motion function. Rumor was that an ongoing legal battle between Sony and Immersion, developers of the rumble function, was what may have influenced Sony's decision to drop the rumble feature. Other console manufacturers pay royalties to Immersion to include the rumble function. Immersion has stepped up with an offer to Sony to put the rumble in the PS3 controller. From GamesIndustry.biz: "For this to happen, Sony would have to drop its current appeal against the 2004 lawsuit that saw it told to pay approximately USD 90 million in damages to Immersion, which had alleged it made illegal use of its "haptic" (rumble) technologies. Immersion president Victor Viegas said he'd "offered them numerous solutions to the problem". "I don't believe it's a very difficult problem to solve, and Immersion has experts that would be happy to solve that problem for them." [EDIT 5/22/06]: From Microsoft's Peter Moore: “The motion sensing, particularly at the sacrifice of force feedback - I'm not even sure that's a good trade off in itself.” Source: Eurogamer.net
