Here's the latest on the state of the video game industry at retail. The NPD Group has reported August 2009 game sales, which accounted for $470.32 million in software (game) sales and $297.60 million in hardware sales. Video game industry sales are down 16% compared to 2008, but things should be changing in September as we enter the busy holiday season releases and new game hardware offerings. Here's the breakdown of August 2009 video game industry sales, based on units, from the NPD Group (via IndustryGamers.com): Game hardware sales (in units) for August 2009: With the introduction of the PlayStation 3 120 GB ("Slim") at the very end of August, the new Xbox 360 system price drop, and a new line of DSi colors, September 2009 NPD hardware numbers should be on their way up. Count games like Guitar Hero 5, The Beatles: Rock Band, Halo 3: ODST, and Wii Fit Plus at the end of the month, and things should be looking up on the game software side as well.
