This week's featured game developer for GTKYD is Corey Davis from Psyonix Studios. Corey was involved in the development of the recent PlayStation 3 PlayStation Network game, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. It's a unique and fun action racing game that'll make you feel like a kid again when you were playing and doing stunts with toy cars. Read on below to find what inspires Corey and how he broke into the game development industry. Who are you and what do you do in the gaming industry? Corey Davis: I'm Corey Davis and I'm a programmer at Psyonix Studios. Everyone here does a little bit of everything and I've done gameplay programming, network code, and game design. What are you currently working on or have recently released? CD: We just released a huge free DLC update to our PSN title Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars in August that added two entirely new maps as well as a lot of gameplay and network improvements. Right now we've got a couple unannounced projects in development that we are pretty excited about. How did you get into the games industry? CD: I grew up loving games and went into computer science at college hoping to get into the industry as a coder. I did a few side projects with mod teams in my spare time for fun. My sophomore year of college I went on Gamasutra.com and started looking for all the companies in my area and emailing whatever contact I could find about a summer internship. Nothing panned out for that summer, but I got an email back about nine months later from Dave Hagewood, Psyonix's president, and I interned and was eventually hired on full time. What is your favorite game you have every played on any console and why? CD: Aside from Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars? If I have to choose, I'll have to split it up between single player and multiplayer favorites. For single player, I think the game I played the most of and liked the best was Final Fantasy Tactics. I've always been a big RPG fan and it was a great combination of story, tactical battles, and character advancement. I've played through it way too many times. A close second would be Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for the original XBOX, my favorite "action RPG". For multiplayer, I have to go with Goldeneye. I spent far, far too many hours in high school at my friend's house playing 4 player Goldeneye. Online multiplayer is amazingly good these days, but I've yet to have as much fun as I did playing that game with 3 of my buddies. I also love the Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) mod for Warcraft 3, been playing that for years and years now. What game(s) are you currently playing? CD: I'm actually waiting for a couple big releases in the next few months. Right now I'm tiding myself over with World of Warcraft, Team Fortress 2, and I'll occasionally boot up Burnout Paradise when I feel like a race. I've been beta testing a great little game called Heroes of Newerth. And we play Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars almost every day at work. Which games are you looking forward to playing in the next year and why? CD: There's some really great ones coming up in the next few months that I'm excited about. I'm a big Bioware fan so both Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age look pretty great to me. I'm curious to see if Gearbox can make Diablo-style loot collection mesh with single player FPS in Borderlands. God of War 3 looks amazing. And you have to be living under a rock not to be looking forward to Modern Warfare 2. What was the last game that you finished? CD: Shadow Complex on XBOX Live Arcade. Having made a downloadable title it's really cool to see what other companies put out there at the $10-$20 price point on Live and PSN, and it's really cool to see games of that caliber showing up on the service. Great game. What is next for you? Anything else you're itching to tell us? # Thanks to Corey Davis and Jordan Williams from Psyonix Studios for making this interview possible!
