The latest game to garner a lot of buzz for the Wii is Disney Interactive Studios' Disney Epic Mickey. In Disney Epic Mickey, Mickey is thrust into a world known as the Cartoon Wasteland, by villain Yen Sid. This happens when Mickey stumbles upon a map which leads him into the world. The Cartoon Wasteland is inhabited by all the forgotten characters of Disney's past, most notably lead by Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Oswald tries to make a comfortable world for himself and other forgotten characters of Disney lore who are left to dwell with him. As Mickey's popularity rises within the Disney universe, life in the Cartoon Wasteland becomes more devastating to live in. It isn't until Mickey discovers this world that he sees the destruction he's unknowingly created. Director and luminary game designer Will Spector says this game is one of "choice and consequence." He also states it will ultimately define both the player and character within Disney Epic Mickey. Players of Disney Epic Mickey will be given moral choices, alongside character class choices, choosing to play as a Hero or a Scrapper. You will use paint and paint thinner as your weapons to craft decisions which ripple throughout the realm of the Cartoon Wasteland. Ultimately, you will be given the discretion of assisting and saving these forgotten Disney characters, or leaving them behind. Disney Epic Mickey's main plot, ironically, blurs the line between gaming fantasy and our actual world. For gamers unaware, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was originally the first character created by Walt Disney and his team. He appeared in various silent cartoons in the late 1920's and was slated to be Disney's first animated star. Due to production costs, the team were unable to retain his rights, and years later Disney's new team created Mickey Mouse. So it is pretty cool to see this blend of actual Disney animation history tied into this game. The premise behind the new Mickey game was put together by Disney Interactive Studios' Think Tank which sought to make a game of Mickey in turmoil. Will Spector was then brought in to flesh out this idea, and this is where the whole idea of choice came into play. Epic Mickey is being developed by Junction Point. Will you make the mischievous Mickey Mouse a selfish being only seeking his path or help out the other characters and making them think different of you? You will be able to push forth these actions in Fall 2010 only on the Wii gaming platform. Pre-order Disney Epic Mickey here.
