OnLive is about to broaden its capabilities to serve its games wirelessly later this month. OnLive’s Steve Perlman has announced at onlive.com that a Wi-Fi Beta of OnLive will launch beginning mid-September. All OnLive members will be able to test the performance of the streaming game service. Currently, users are required to plug-in to a wired internet connection to ensure gameplay runs without any lag. OnLive takes care of the graphical power and storage of data on their end and delivers a seamless single-player or multiplayer gameplay experience, so it’s quite a feat to be able to deliver this wirelessly.
OnLive also officially started to support netbooks and connection speeds as low as 3 Mbps (although 5Mbps is recommended), expanding its reach and allowing hardware to run processor intensive games that wouldn’t be possible in any other way. There will be a demonstration this weekend of OnLive’s wireless play and a showing of OnLive’s MicroConsoles (coming soon) at PAX Prime (booth 3446).
