On the heels of all the buzz for Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy XIV, their new MMORPG, will begin a beta on March 11, 2010. According to 1UP.com, Square Enix told their fans at “VanaFest 2010” that three new areas will be added to Final Fantasy XI, their previous MMORPG, and that beta testing begins next month for Final Fantasy XIV.
RPG fans can rejoice with all of this Final Fantasy news, but may need to come back down to earth because testing for MMOs can take a very long time. I also think that it would be a misstep to release Final Fantasy games so close together. But, Final Fantasy XIV is still scheduled for an estimated release in 2010. Just don’t hold your breath; MMOs tend to get pushed back due to their insanely long development cycle.
Remember, this being a closed beta, minimal invites will be sent out. If you missed out on the application which took place in December, don’t get frustrated. More details on the Final Fantasy XIV beta will be announced soon.
