Today, Apple announced a new upcoming feature for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad called Game Center. Coming with the newly announced iPhone 4.0 update, Game Center allows you to play games with your friends and start earning achievements and more. Here is what you can expect:
- Social Gaming Network
- Invite Friends
- Leaderboards
- Matchmaking
- Achievements
Unfortunately, Apple has not gone into more details, however there is speculation that a wide variety of arcade games will be tied into the mix. How this will affect other social game network providers such as OpenFeint remains to be seen. Along with the Game Center feature, Apple has announced that the iPhone OS 4.0 update will include other features such as multitasking (talk on Skype while browsing the internet), improved UI to help maximize the performance and battery power while using these features, enhanced email features, iBooks app, iAd and more! Note: The multitasking feature will only be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3rd generation.
