Playstation 3 40 GB Retail Package Box Shot

Here’s the Playstation 3 40GB retail box you can expect to see in stores soon, on November 2nd. The packaging is pretty distinct from the 80GB PS3 model, although maybe another color PS3 may have been easier for the average consumer to digest. The red 40GB/80GB markings in the lower left are pretty clear, along with what you are getting in the package: the Spider-man 3 Blu-ray movie or Motorstorm PS3 game. The 40 GB Playstation 3 is a good value for getting into the HD Blu-ray era for those who haven’t made a jump yet. Backwards compatibility is something that isn’t so visible from the packshot.

From Sony: “The new 40GB PS3 will no longer play PlayStation 2 titles, reflecting the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles. Consumers looking for backwards compatibility can take advantage of the limited PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility of the 80GB PS3.”

So if getting rid of your current PS2, or having your PS2 game library playable on the PS3 is important for you, go for the 80 GB model (or one of the now older 60GB models which have the PS2 hardware in it). Read more on the 40GB release and 80 GB PS3 price drop announcement here.

See the packaging for both Playstation 3 40GB and 80GB consoles below. The 40GB PS3 will retail for $399.99 and the 80GB is now available for $499.99. The 5 free Blu-ray movie deal is still available (here), until 1/31/08.
