Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. today announced sales figures of their PlayStation 3 system during the holiday season. Accounting for holiday sales from the last week of November 2009 through December 2009, the PlayStation 3 system exceeded 3.8 million units sold worldwide. Sony sold Black Friday bundles of its newer and slimmer PlayStation 3 system during the last week of November, which included 2 PlayStation 3 games at select retailers. These likely helped to boost sales, along with the newer and slimmer form factor of the hardware and $299.99 entry price. Sony also noted that more than 38 million PlayStation Network accounts have been registered to date worldwide.

Sony’s press release stated, "The PS3 platform experienced a 76% increase in hardware sales compared to the same period in the previous year, marking the highest record sales for PS3 hardware for a holiday period."

Sony is planning to boost interest in the PlayStation 3 further this year. Besides noting the rollout of games like God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, MAG, Heavy Rain and ModNation Racers, watch for this year’s introduction of the tentatively named "Motion Controller," along with offering 3D stereoscopic gaming with the use of a 3D Bravia TV. 3D gaming support will be available on the PS3 following a Firmware Update.

2010 will prove to be a great year for gaming on the PlayStation 3 system. The PlayStation 3 is currently available for $299.99 in a 120GB configuration and $349.99 in a 250GB configuration.
