A very brief playable demo of Resident Evil Revelations was included in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. Pre-order Resident Evil Revelations here from GameStop.
Capcom has launched a Facebook game for Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, titled “The War on Horror.” The shooting gallery style game is short and quick, running at 45 seconds a round, and introduces some of the Resident Evil characters in the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game. Capcom is also offering up a Nintendo 3DS system and a Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D game in a leaderboard contest. The contest is open to residents in the US, UK and Australia.
In The War on Horror Facebook game, players must try to shoot the infected while avoiding friendly fire on the mercenaries. Bonus points go for headshots. A little gameplay tip: tap on the “More Targets” button to increase the odds and opportunities for a higher score.
Capcom also announced that Rebecca Chambers will be available as a playable character in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. Keep a lookout for the release of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D for the Nintendo 3DS on June 28, 2011 in North America.
Capcom and Activision have released statements on the impact of the PlayStation Network (PSN) downtime following the hack that took the PS3 and PSP’s online service down. The PSN has been down for several weeks now. While the full PSN functionality is not expected to be back until the end of May 2011, several of the first features to return will include online gameplay for the PS3 and PSP, PSN account management, PlayStation Home, Friends List, access to Qriocity Music Unlimited service (for existing subscribers), and chat functionality (see details here). The return date of the PlayStation Store and other functions are not expected before the end of May 2011.
Several of the video game industry’s large game publishers provided some perspective of the cost of what the missing PSN storefront means. A response on Capcom’s Capcom Unity forums by Christian Svensson, Capcom’s Corporate Officer/Senior Vice-President, said “…as an executive responsible for running a business, the resulting outage obviously costing us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget. These are funds we rely on to bring new games to market for our fans.”
In Activision’s Monday afternoon Q1 2011 Earnings call, Eric Hirshberg, Activision Publishing CEO, stated “We’re planning on launching the Call of Duty Escalation content pack for the PS3 later in the quarter and I’m hopeful that this situation will be resolved by then.” The Call of Duty: Black Ops Escalation Map Pack is anticipated to be available for the PS3 around June 2011 and will sell for $14.99. Historically as one of the biggest selling downloadable game add-ons, not having the PlayStation Store available for selling the DLC is clearly a concern. Thomas Tippl, Activision’s CFO, said: “For the June quarter, we expect non-GAAP revenues of $575 million, revenues will be down versus the prior year, due primarily to a smaller product lineup and the expected loss of high-margin revenue due to the temporary the PlayStation Network shutdown.”
Capcom takes crowdsourcing further for Mega Man Legends 3, their upcoming Nintendo 3DS game. Building the game alongside fan feedback, Capcom is releasing an early version of Mega Man Legends 3 asMega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version. The “Prototype Version” will also be one of the first games available for download in the upcoming May debut of the Nintendo eShop for the 3DS.
Details from Capcom:
“Mega Man Legends 3 is the first Capcom game to be co-developed by the fans. Prototype Version gives players the first taste of Mega Man’s upcoming open-world action/adventure game, and lets them see a game still early in the development process. It also introduces a new character to the franchise, the reckless leader of a sky biker gang, Barrett.
Be the first to try out his new close combat gameplay style, and see first-hand some of the fan contributions to the game come to life. Also, once you have finished the core missions, receive access to areas of the game not yet finished, as well as a debug menu that gives you special moves and abilities.”
