About Dead Space 2: Severed from Electronic Arts:

This digital pack will take players through the haunting story of Gabe Weller, who fans will remember from the award-winning game Dead Space Extraction. As a security officer, Weller comes equipped with a one-of-a-kind security suit and an upgraded, more powerful Pulse Rifle that will help him unleash his own blood-curdling adventure across the Sprawl. Lurking behind every corner is another bloodthirsty monster but the big surprise for Weller (and fans) is the return of the Twitcher, a grotesque enemy who first appeared in the original Dead Space game.”

Dead Space 2 launch day!

Brace yourselves! Dead Space fans are in for more than their fill of thrills today. Today EA and Visceral Games release not only the next chapter of terror in the Dead Space game series, but several new additions to the overall Dead Space saga. Dead Space 2 is now available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in North America (arrives in Europe on January 28). Continuing the story centered around protagonist Isaac Clarke, players can bet on scares from the onset of Dead Space 2.

A summary of Dead Space 2 from EA:
“Dead Space 2 pushes the limits of action, horror and terror. After mysteriously awaking in a sprawling, massive city anchored to one of Saturn’s moons, hero Isaac Clarke again finds himself thrust into the middle of a relentless Necromorph outbreak. Surrounded by the screeching cries of undead monsters and the haunting drum of echoing noises, Isaac plots a course through The Sprawl.”

The Dead Space 2 retail release packs an Online Pass to activate online gameplay features, which can be purchased from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace for 800 MSP ($10) or PSN for $9.99. Keep that in mind if renting, buying used or even borrowing! Another unique code also included in the retail package is a Isaac Clarke-Inspired Armor code for use in Dragon Age II (for Xbox 360 release). The Xbox 360 version of Dead Space 2 includes two discs, while the PS3 version fits the game on one Blu-ray disc. A special Dead Space 2 Collector’s Edition is available and packs in additional content for fans of the series. The PS3 Collector’s/Limited Edition includes the PlayStation Move compatible Dead Space Extraction game as a bonus (also available from the PSN later today). See what is packed in the Collector’s Edition for the PlayStation 3 (here), Xbox 360 (here) and PC (here). See detailed Dead Space 2 Collector’s Edition unboxing pictures below, or in full screen here! For Dead Space 2 gameplay tips and additional content (like this exclusive Dead Space suit), Prima Games has released the Dead Space 2 Prima Official Game Guide, available in a standard edition and a Collector’s Edition (with even more content and game development details for Dead Space fans).

Exponentially building on the series, Dead Space debuts on the iPhone and iPod touch (available here from the App Store for $6.99) and in an iPad HD version (available here from the App Store for $9.99). The Dead Space iOS release is a unique story that takes place before the events of Dead Space 2. Another addition to the Dead Space storyline is Dead Space: Aftermath, the second animated Dead Space film. It also launches today and is available in both Blu-ray and DVD format.

The Dead Space story doesn’t end there, with the announcement of the upcoming Dead Space: Severed downloadable content. Severed adds two additional chapters to the Dead Space 2 game, based on characters from Dead Space Extraction. EA’s announcement on Dead Space: Severed said, “In Dead Space 2: Severed, the story of Weller and Lexine runs parallel to Isaac’s blood-curdling adventure in Dead Space 2, but this time players will take on the role of Gabe Weller. Working as a Sprawl Security Guard, Weller has to fight against his own onslaught of Necromorphs, as he attempts to get both him and Lexine to safety.”

Dead Space 2 logo

Visceral Games sends a little holiday video greeting, capturing Isaac Clarke at work at Visceral. What does Isaac Clarke lookout for in the game studio? Well, the usual things he looks out for in-game. Watch the live-action video clip here, at the official Dead Space 2 YouTube page. A fun little clip of the new Isaac Clarke suit. The Dead Space 2 YouTube page also showcases several Dead Space 2 videos and Q&As with Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer of Dead Space 2. It’s a great place to catch up with the videos that have been (and will be) released for Dead Space 2.

Remember that the Dead Space 2 demo will be released tomorrow, December 21st, on the PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Marketplace. In the demo, players will get a sampling of fighting it out in the Church of Unitology, firing away the new Javelin Gun and floating through zero gravity.

Dead Space 2 will be available on January 25, 2011 in a standard edition on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC as well as a Collector’s Edition for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The PlayStation 3 version includes the PlayStation Move compatible Dead Space Extraction, previously released exclusively on the Wii.

Dead Space Extraction – review

Dead Space Extraction
Platform: Wii
Developed by: Visceral Games
Publisher: Electronic Arts

Release date: September 28, 2009
Official website: deadspace.ea.com

Game summary from Electronic Arts:
"Telling the story of four space colonists trying to escape a mysterious infection, Dead Space Extraction explores the origins of the necromorph invasion that threatens humanity and the universe. At the center of this group is Lexine, an important new heroine being introduced for the first time to the Dead Space storyline. As the crew continues to fight for their lives, it becomes clear that protecting her is their only hope for survival. Luckily, players are armed with an arsenal of weaponry, an easy-to-use control system built from the ground up for the Wii, and can even recruit a friend to play co-operatively, a first for the Dead Space franchise."

Review Summary:
Dead Space Extraction is a great looking and fun to play sci-fi horror shooter on the Wii. Although the campaign is fairly short in length, there are more difficulty levels, gameplay stats to master, and Challenge Modes to keep your Wii Remote blazing. Seasoned Dead Space players will appreciate environments that are familiar and new. Take heed to the Motion Sickness warning for this game, especially in the earlier levels. I haven’t felt a level of this queasiness in a videogame since Prey. Whether you played the original Dead Space game (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC) or not, this is one of those few, must play games on the Wii that caters to the older audience of Wii gamers.

Rating: 4 out of 5
