Wondering what’s happened to the Borderlands game? Borderlands has undergone a graphical overhaul, as you can see in the screenshot comparison above. The new look has a cel-shaded quality, similar to the Crackdown Xbox 360 game. It’s a turn from the realistic look the game was going for back in 2007, as you can see in the trailer here.

See 7 newly released high-resolution screenshots here (or thumbnails here).

What do you think about the new graphic direction?

Keep a lookout at borderlandsthegame.com for more. The game is coming from 2K Games and Gearbox Software for the Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3 and PC.

A summary of Borderlands, from 2K Games:
“Borderlands combines the best in first-person action with player customization and vehicular combat for incredible layers of gameplay depth. The game features a groundbreaking content generation system allowing for near-endless variety in weapons, item drops and character customization. Borderlands allows for multiple players to share the same game experience simultaneously online in co-op gameplay. Players can freely join or leave each other’s games at anytime, or choose to play in the full single-player mode. These features, along with a rich and deep fiction that touches upon the mysteries buried beneath the surface of a danger-filled planet, combine to form a breakthrough experience that challenges the conventions of modern shooters.”

Why did the Dead Space Extraction game developers go with creating a “Guided First Person Experience” on the Wii, rather than a free-roaming first-person shooter? To “maximize the visual fidelity you see on screen,” according to the game’s Executive Producer, Steve Papoutsis.

You can see from some of the first Dead Space Extraction gameplay clips below (or in HD here), it’s pulling off some amazing graphics on the Wii. See the video below from IGN with Executive Producer, Steve Papoutsis.

Steve recaps some of the unique gameplay found in Dead Space Extraction (we took note of it before here). Things like “zero-g, branching paths, camera control”. Drop-in/drop-out 2-player gameplay is supported as well.

We know the free FPS gameplay was compromised for graphics and other Wii motion mechanics. So it’s a little give and take on the Wii for Dead Space Extraction. After seeing the video, I’d take it!

Watch for Dead Space Extraction on the Wii in fall 2009.
