Medal of Honor

Today Electronic Arts and game developer DICE release Medal of Honor, which takes place in a new modern day setting for the first time in the FPS series. Somewhat overshadowed by the controversy of naming, and later renaming, the multiplayer enemies “Opposing Force” (see here), Medal of Honor puts players in missions inspired U.S. Army confrontations in Afghanistan.

Medal of Honor is available starting today for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Launch copies of Medal of Honor come packaged as a “Limited Edition” with extras that include Battlefield 3 Beta access, special weapons and an exclusive Special Ops player skin.

EA notes some highlights on the Medal of Honor series and today’s release of Medal of Honor:

  • Highest pre-orders in the 11-year history of the Medal of Honor franchise.
  • Supported by a global marketing campaign including multiple TV spots during Monday Night Football and out-of-home billboards in top 6 U.S. markets including attention-getting real estate in Manhattan’s Times Square.
  • Over 180K Facebook fans and 25K Twitter followers before the game even shipped.
  • Exposed Medal of Honor multiplayer to over 1M people across PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC platforms via two open betas to ensure the best performing multiplayer gameplay experience.
  • PC Multiplayer Beta Peak Simultaneous Users (PSUs) outperformed EA’s previous record-holder Battlefield: Bad Company™ 2 by 41%.
  • According to internal estimates, Medal of Honor is slated to be the biggest blockbuster week-one event in October 2010 outpacing movies such as ‘The Social Network’ ($46M), ‘Secretariat’ ($12.6) and ‘Life as We Know It’ ($14.6). Box office estimates according to Boxofficemojo.com.
  • Launched Linkin Park song “Catalyst” to #1 with music video set in the Medal of Honor fiction; 6.5M worldwide views to date making it #1 most viewed video on YouTube on August 1 and 2.

Medal of Honor Limited Edition with Battlefield Bad Company 3 beta

Electronic Arts today announced that a open multiplayer beta will be available for a brief period for PC gamers. Just before the October 12, 2010 launch of the new Medal of Honor game, EA and DICE are allowing PC players in a Multiplayer Open Beta on October 4th. The Multiplayer Open Beta only runs until October 7, 2010. So if you want to check it out, you should go to www.medalofhonor.com/pcopenbeta for where to download it and play during that brief period of four days. The Multiplayer Open Beta gives a sampling of two maps and two gameplay modes.

Here are the details on the Medal of Honor Multiplayer Open Beta maps from EA:
“The Medal of Honor Multiplayer Open Beta features two new maps inspired by real world locations: Kunar Base and Shahikot Mountains. Kunar Base is played in the Sector Control multiplayer mode where two sides fight to control tactical sectors of the map. Shahikot Mountains is played in the tactical and objective-based Combat Mission multiplayer mode where gamers battle through a series of objectives to defeat the opposing team. Both modes pit teams of 12 players (total 24 players) against one another with realistic destruction, tactical support actions and a weapon customization system that generates hundreds of combinations.”

In light of the controversy behind Medal of Honor, Frank Gibeau, President of EA Games Label, stated the following as part of the reason for the PC Multiplayer Open Beta: “We also hope that by offering the Multiplayer Open Beta, we can clear up any misunderstanding about the patriotism and respect that are the foundation of this game. The Medal of Honor franchise has always shown extraordinary reverence for American and Allied soldiers — this game is no exception.”

Medal of Honor will be available for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, on October 12, 2010 in North America and on October 15, 2010 in Europe. Visit the official website for more details at www.MedalofHonor.com.
