new maps

Any fans of Halo Wars will be happy to know that a few new maps and new Achievements are headed your way. According to Major Nelson’s blog, 4 new maps and 4 new achievements will be available for purchase to keep your strategic mind going.

Here’s the scoop on the new maps and Achievements you can expect:

Historic Battles – 800 Microsoft Points ($10)

Maps:
– Barrens (1v1 Map): Difficult terrain channels units into killing zones. The side that controls the Forerunner artifacts will have the advantage.
– Blood River (1v1 Map): Secure base locations on nearby cliffs overlook this naturally red-tinged river. The soldiers that fought over its two narrow crossings gave the river its name, which has since taken on a greater meaning.
– Glacial Ravine (3v3 Map): A snow-topped mountain range forms a natural barrier that cuts this region in half. Control of the two energy walls at the narrow central pass often determines the outcome of the battle, though clever use of the Sentinel Factories may play a role as well.
- Memorial Basin (2v2 Map): The high ground in the middle offers good cover for infantry, while the generally open terrain transforms organized battle plans into bloodbaths.

Achievements:
– Tour Coming Through: Hot drop 50 squads to your Covenant Leader in a single game on Memorial Basin (30 points)
– Never Leave a Man Behind: Finish a game with 5000 net resources contributed to your teammates on Barrens (15 points)
– Drain Cleaner: Kill 20 enemy squads with a continuous Covenant Leader Power on Memorial Basin (30 points)
- Killjoy: Disrupt 5 active Leader Powers in a single game on Blood River (25 points)

You will be able to download the Historic Battles pack for Halo Wars from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace on July 21st for 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

Pretty soon, you’ll be fighting Helgast players on one of their transports, or ISA players on one of theirs. Sony Computer Entertainment America has released details and the availability date for the first “Steel and Titanium” multiplayer maps for Killzone 2. The two new multiplayer levels, or heavy transports, will be released on April 30, 2009 via the PlayStation Network. The cost of the maps haven’t been announced yet.

Here are the details from SCEA on the new Killzone 2 maps:
Wasteland Bullet, which pulls inspiration from the train level “Tharsis Refinery” in the single player campaign, takes the action right onto a high-speed bullet train that is used to transports goods and troops between Pyrrhus and the Wasteland. On the train, players must navigate through a narrow and treacherous tight layout, dodging oncoming obstacles, while facing off with the enemy on top of two high-speed moving trains. The action is frenzied and dangerous as players will be able to jump back and forth between the trains throughout the level, while maintaining focus and remaining aware because hitting a concrete pillar or other obstacles at the train’s high speeds could mean instant death!”

“In the second map, Vekta Cruiser, which is based on the “Cruiser” level from the single player campaign, players as the ISA troops find themselves in close quarters, boarding a vast ship. Their goal is to repel a force of assaulting Helghast troops while simultaneously protecting the cruiser from enemy fire. The action takes place entirely indoors in a frantic and claustrophobic environment where the battle against Helghast continues. Attackers are lurking around every so attention and focus is key.”

GameTrailers TV previously released some footage from the maps. See the maps in action below. Wasteland Bullet looks fun for it’s dangerous environment and calls for some careful maneuvers while under fire. The Vekta Cruiser makes for a slick multi-layered battleground.
