Nintendo 3DS Midnight launch event at Best Buy Union Square, NYC

Nintendo ushered in a brave new world of glasses-free 3D gaming with its Nintendo 3DS. The new handheld went on sale shortly after midnight at Best Buy Union Square in New York City. Fans of the Big N came out in droves despite frigid temperatures to be among the first to own the coveted new Nintendo 3DS. The line for the 3DS launch event stretched a city block, but at the front was none other than Nintendo fanboy, Isaiah-Triforce Johnson (pictured above), who had camped out since Monday. Those waiting in line kept their spirits up with a seemingly endless stream of free food, Nintendo 3DS swag (including hats and hoodies) and, of course, hands-on time with the hotly anticipated handheld. It was clear that these diehard Nintendo fans were pumped for the release of the Nintendo 3DS. A few fans even dressed as Nintendo characters to show their enthusiasm.

Nintendo 3DS Midnight launch event at Best Buy Union Square, NYC As midnight approached, Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime thanked those in attendance and proclaimed the end of the 3D glasses era. But before glasses-free 3D gaming could be formally welcomed, Nintendo wanted to instill the idea that people would never have to use glasses again to experience 3D. 3D specs were passed to the crowd and in a symbolic gesture, were thrown into the air in a show of liberation from glasses for a realistic 3D experience. As 3D glasses and confetti filled the air, Reggie declared that the Nintendo 3DS’s time had come. With that announcement, the line moved steadily into Best Buy where Reggie ceremoniously greeted Isaiah-Triforce and sold him the first Nintendo 3DS in North America. New York City’s The HOTcakes played their music as more fans were welcomed into the store and eagerly purchased what they had waited so long for: the future of 3D gaming.

For more details on the Nintendo 3DS, see www.nintendo.com/3ds. The Nintendo 3DS is now available in North America for $249.99 MSRP in Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black.
