There are more rumblings that a new PlayStation Portable that will be shown at E3 this year. Following previous rumors stemming from sources working on the new hardware, 1up.com has posted its own details from sources working on the new PSP.

Both of the PSP rumors from 1up and PocketGamer.co.uk stories claim controls that slide out from underneath the display. Where they conflict is on the dual analog stick controls and touch screen interface. 1up.com’s sources say the new PSP won’t have dual analog stick controls, while PocketGamer.co.uk’s sources say it will. According to 1up.com, this PSP won’t be the "PSP-4000" or the" PSP 2". 1up.com says it will be called the PSP Go! to match Sony’s product naming in other regions of the world (like on the PSP Go! Camera). There’s no mention of a touch screen in 1up.com’s sources either.

1up.com even posted a rumored release date of September 2009 for Japan and an October-November 2009 release for the US, available in a 8GB or 16GB storage capacity.

Sony of course hasn’t confirmed anything yet. It does seem something new is in the works for the PSP. True or not, Sony needs to deliver a new PSP to keep alive in the increasingly competitive mobile gaming market.

Since the first PlayStation Portable launched in 2005, there have been two revisions to the hardware. The hardware evolution was greatest in the PSP-1000 to PSP-2000 jump (see comparison pictures here), with a few minor upgrades in the PSP-3000 release (see comparison pictures here). The PSP may finally be getting a significant hardware upgrade soon and it may be shown at the June 2009 E3 Expo. This rumor comes from PocketGamer.co.uk, who received the information from an unnamed developer.

From PocketGamer.co.uk:
“…having spoken to an insider source – who’s not Dave Perry, but is a developer working on the new hardware – we can reveal that the new handheld will arrive before Christmas and will be far more similar to the iPhone than the current device.

Like Apple’s newcomer, the PSP 2 will be a compact device with a large touchscreen. However, where Sony’s machine has the edge is when the touchscreen is slid open as it reveals familiar buttons, D-pads and – praise the Lord of Handhelds – dual analogue controls.”

There’s been no official announcement from Sony yet. Maybe this is one bit of new game hardware we’ll be seeing at E3. If it’s the PSP-4000 or the PSP2, we hope this PSP revision brings the significant PSP hardware evolution gamers have been waiting for.
