World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

Today Blizzard Entertainment announced that World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has sold a whopping 3.3 million units in the first 24 hours of release. This is according to internal records from Blizzard Entertainment and distributors. The 3.3 million units also accounts for digital sales, in addition to the sales of the retail standard edition and Collector’s Edition. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm launched on December 7, 2010. Blizzard has outdone itself, beating their own StarCraft II sales earlier this year.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is available in a standard edition and a Collector’s Edition. More details on World of Warcraft: Cataclysm are available at www.blizzard.com.

PlayStation Move Controller

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) has announced that sales of its PlayStation Move Motion Controller have reached over 4.1 million units sold worldwide. Sony’s PlayStation Move launched September 15 in Europe/PAL and Asian regions, on September 19 in North America, and October 21 in Japan. These sales numbers are just for the PlayStation Move Motion Controller and do not account for the PlayStation Eye Camera or the optional PlayStation Move Navigation Controller. Online availability of the standalone PlayStation Move Motion Controller has been fairly slim. GameStop is offering a PlayStation Move Controller Bundle (which includes the Navigation controller) for $79.98.

Over 30 PlayStation 3 games currently support PlayStation Move, along with future anticipated PS3 games like Killzone 3, Dead Space Extraction (included with Dead Space 2) and LittleBigPlanet 2. Each PlayStation 3 system can support up to four PlayStation Move Motion Controllers, with some games supporting the use of two PlayStation Move Motion Controllers at a time. If you’re on the fence about PlayStation Move, try to get your hands-on with Sports Champions, Tumble or Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition with the PlayStation Move Navigation controller. Those are just a few of the fun games that make PlayStation Move a worthwhile add-on to your gaming. A few demos of PlayStation Move games are available for download from the PlayStation Network.

PlayStation Move is available in the following options (minimum requirements to play are one PlayStation Move Motion Controller and a PlayStation Eye Camera):

PlayStation 3 320GB System with PlayStation Move Bundle
PlayStation Move Starter Bundle
PlayStation Move Controller Bundle
PlayStation Move Controller
PlayStation Move Navigation Controller
PlayStation Eye

Activision announced today that their newest entry into the Call of Duty series, Black Ops, has surpassed the towering five-day sales records set by its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Call of Duty: Black Ops raked in more than $650 million dollars worldwide since it was first released, which is a record besting even the movie Titanic (but not Avatar).

In addition to setting that record, the game also posted 5.9 million gameplay hours by the end of launch day and 2.6 million unique gamers within the one day period. Call of Duty: Black Ops also did extremely well on the PlayStation 3. Although Black Ops has already been a hit, let’s not forget that the holiday shopping season is currently gaining steam.

kinect_for_xbox_360

Microsoft has announced Kinect for Xbox 360 has sold over one million units in the first ten days since its launch on November 4th (US). This accounts for worldwide sales of Kinect, which launched on November 10th in Europe. Kinect is set to launch in Asia on November 18th and Japan on November 20th. Microsoft is projecting to sell 5 million Kinect units before year’s end.

This is good news for the future of the controller-free and motion control gaming on the Xbox 360. While the Kinect launch games are fairly family-oriented and multiplayer party fare, the sales have likely paved the way for more games for the seasoned gamers. Like the rumored Gears of War Kinect title. A larger player base definitely makes the Kinect platform more appealing to game developers and publishers. Games like Dance Central, Kinect Sports, Kinectimals, Sonic Free Riders and Your Shape Fitness Evolved are a few of the currently available Kinect games worth checking out.

Kinect for Xbox 360 retails for $149.99 MSRP and is also packaged in the Xbox 360 250GB bundle and Xbox 360 4GB bundle. In-stock availability still looks pretty slim in North America, however Walmart has Kinect in stock in a Kinect bundle with two games here. More details on Kinect are available at www.xbox.com/Kinect.
