Today LucasArts and Epic Games have announced a “long-term, studio-wide agreement for LucasArts to develop multiple projects using Epic Games’ award-winning Unreal Engine 3.” What games will be utilizing the Unreal Engine 3 were not announced, but with the Star Wars franchise in its library, you can only imagine what this could mean from LucasArts. The Unreal Engine 3 is capable to create and distribute highly detailed games across many platforms, including the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and into mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPad and Sony’s upcoming “Next Generation Portable” (NGP).
“LucasArts is now primed to capitalize on Unreal Engine 3′s ability to scale across platforms, from mobile, through PC and console all the way up to the next generation of games,” said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games. “We can’t wait to see what happens when LucasArts combines their talented workforce and amazing intellectual properties with Unreal Engine 3.”

The games are being developed for “multiple mobile and downloadable platforms, including iOS, Android, PlayStation Network and set-top boxes,” according to the announcement.
“Gameloft is very pleased to partner with Epic, especially with their ability to stay ahead of the curve and continually place the best game engine technology in developers’ hands at any given point in time,” said Julien Fournials, vice president of production, Gameloft. “Using Unreal Engine 3 allows us to push game visuals with remarkable lighting and high-fidelity environments. Epic Games is making the power of the Unreal Engine 3 available to Sony’s Next Generation Portable (aka NGP). Previously showcased at the PlayStation Meeting 2011 in Tokyo (see video here), Epic Games today announced that the Unreal Engine 3 will be supported on the NGP. Mark Rein also stated several launch NGP games will be using the Unreal Engine 3.
“We were very proud to be onstage with SCE to give the world just a taste of what Unreal Engine 3 can do on NGP,” said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games. “NGP raises the bar for the performance of handheld platforms with its multi-core GPU and shader-based, multi-core CPU. This makes Unreal Engine 3 a particularly advantageous fit for NGP. Furthermore, multiple UE3 licensees are already working with NGP, some of which have indicated they intend to release their games for the platform’s launch.”
